Tom Hanks on an Amigo SmartShopper!

My co-worker Jon spotted a clip of Tom Hanks on an Amigo SmartShopper in a behind the scenes clip for his new movie "Larry Crowne."

Tom is shown backing a SmartShopper motorized shopping cart into a parking spot next to other Amigo carts! Tom, you look like a pro driving the Amigo!

Visit www.hanxonset.com and click on the clip "It's Goin' in the Cart!" to watch Tom on the Amigo.

Accessible Travel Destination: Bavarian Inn

Located just a few minutes from Amigo Mobility headquarters in Bridgeport, the Bavarian Inn of Frankenmuth is a popular tourist destination. I grew up knowing the Zehnder family, owners of the Bavarian Inn, and am so pleased they offer an Amigo for guests to rent during their stay.

Featuring 18 barrier free guestrooms, the Bavarian Inn works hard to accommodate all guests. We have even hosted Amigo owner round up conferences there in the past!

If you visit the Bavarian Inn, be sure to tell them hello from the Thieme family, and stop in and see us at Amigo!

Amigo: Certified Eco-Friendly

Green Business Certified, Amigo Mobility continues to find ways to be more environmentally friendly. As the on-staff "tree hugger," I'm always encouraging my co-workers to be more eco-friendly through small, everyday changes. Through a recent audit... we found that our small changes are definitely adding up!

Recently, the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center conducted an audit and here is how we rated:
  • Top 10% for having one of the lowest scrap rates of .016%
  • Lowest energy and utility costs as a percentage of sales:
    • Median: 1.11%
    • Amigo: 0.24%
Great job Team Amigo!

Ron Bachman Inspires Others to "Walk this Way"

An Amigo owner for 31 years, I'm proud to call Ron Bachman a friend and a source of inspiration. At the age of four, both of Ron's legs were amputated but he was raised with encouragement from his parents that he could do anything. And just because he walked differently than others, it didn't mean he was different.

Today, Ron is a motivational speaker and travels around the country speaking to students on the importance of tolerance, confidence and treating everyone with respect. He focuses his message on anti-bullying and has inspired thousands to "walk this way."

Meet Ron:

If you are interested in contacting Ron about speaking at your school or workplace, click here. You can also visit his Facebook page where he is able to talk one on one with his 10,000+ fans.

Have pictures, we will build

My most recent customization project was sent to us in the form of photos directly from the customer for me to build the unit from. The customized Amigo RD included the following specifications:
  • Tilt-In-Space
  • Wedged shaped seat cushion (higher in the front)
  • Contoured high seat back
  • Arm pads moved 3” forward
  • Width adjustable lift out leg retainers
With each of these customizations, the Amigo meets the owner's specific needs, allowing them to remain comfortable and carrying on with their daily routine.

Open House Success

The Amigo Mobility Center open house held last Friday and Saturday saw many Amigo owners and even members of public office. The hot dogs went as fast as the grillmaster (me) could grill them! We enjoyed catching up with everyone who stopped out and meeting the new faces that will hopefully be regulars at future open houses. Thank you to everyone who visited  and please stop by again soon!

Update: Music to Make a Difference

Last month I mentioned musician and Amigo owner Catherine Branch's mission to submit the piece composed for her Music of Difference concert to the Pulitzer Prize committee.

I am please to announce that Catherine has reached her goal of $3,200 via her kickstarter.com page and will be funded next week.

Congrats, Catherine! We're looking forward to hearing the results of the Pulitzer Prize submission.

Special Guest

Amigo Mobility Center - Bridgeport is busily preparing for the open house tomorrow and Saturday. We are extremely pleased that Representative Dale Kildee, of the 5th District of Michigan, will be stopping by tomorrow afternoon around 2:30 p.m. He will be greeting open house guests, meeting with owners Al and Beth Thieme and taking a tour of the corporate headquarters. Congressman Kildee believes strongly in protecting American manufacturing jobs -- of which Amigo Mobility is definitely in support of well! That's why we try to buy from as many local suppliers as possible.

Please stop by if you're in the area! Get directions and further open house information.

Young Swimmer's Disability is Her Strength

Hannah, 10, trains at the YMCA in Raleigh

"Everyone has something about them that's different," Hannah Aspden said. "Mine is just more obvious."

Hannah was born with congenital hip disarticulation and does not have her left leg, but has not let that slow her down one bit. An inspiring 10 year old from Raleigh, N.C., Hannah was recently featured in the Raleigh News & Observer.

After starting swimming at age four, Hannah has loved being in the pool ever since. She recently was the youngest competitor at the U.S. Paralympics Spring Nationals/2011 Spring Can-Am Meet, with dreams to swim in the Olympics or Paralympics.
Hannah's confidence and positive spirit reminds me of Amigo owner Ron Bachman, who had both legs amputated at a young age and today travels the country as a motivational speaker.

Hannah, Ron and the many other people with disabilities I have met or read about continue to inspire me daily!
