Amigo President Runs Boston Marathon

Amigo president Tim Drumhiller will be spending his weekend in Boston preparing to run the 116th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 16th! Tim is an avid runner, and the Boston Marathon will mark the 20th marathon he has participated in.

The 26.2 mile race is the world's oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the world's most prestigious road racing events. More than 25,000 people are expected to participate in this year's race.

The Boston Athletic Association is proud to also extend the challenge of the marathon to people with disabilities. Since the first wheelchair racer completed the marathon in 1975, the Boston Marathon has added a push rim wheelchair division, a division for the visually impaired and a mobility impaired program.

Over the years, more than 1,000 people with varying disabilities have competed in the wheelchair division of the Boston Marathon. One particularly inspiring story is that of Rick and Dick Hoyt, a father and son team known as Team Hoyt, who have completed the marathon together many times.

Rick was born with cerebral palsy, and he and his father Dick have completed more than 1,000 races, including 66 marathons and 229 triathlons, with Dick pushing Rick in a custom made running chair.

The 2009 Boston Marathon was officially Team Hoyt's 1,000th race, and Rick has said that the Boston Marathon is always his favorite. Team Hoyt will participate in their 30th Boston Marathon this year at ages 71 and 50.

Team Amigo will be thinking of Tim, Dick and Rick on Monday -- we wish you all a fun and safe run!
