Stop Medicare Waste - Shane Dewey

"I got my first Amigo when I was in sixth grade, which I fell in love with. It was the front wheel drive model, and it opened my whole world up. It meant my mom and dad wouldn't have to carry me anymore. I had that Amigo a long time -- I used it for at least 15 years. Then I got an Amigo J9 and moved out of my parents' house and got my own apartment.

About 5 years later I started hearing about these power wheelchairs that insurance would pay for 100%, so I called the 1-800 number and got a power chair. I discovered I needed help with everyday things like dressing, and transferring was impossible since there is no handle bar to hang on to -- everything was harder. I called the company and told them the power chair was not working out for me, but they kept telling me I just needed to get used to the new chair and they couldn't take it back. It's kind of hard to get used to something when it doesn't work for me.

I have an Amigo RD now and my power chair sits in the corner and I use it as a coat rack. I hope things change soon, as my Amigo is eight years old now and is starting to show its age. Amigos just work so much better for me, and now I know I'm not alone and more power chairs are being used for coat racks. I will always buy Amigos."
