MDA Lock-Up

Kate Hofmann, Marketing Manager at Amigo Mobility, served time today in support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The MDA Lock-Up event took place in Saginaw, Mich., and was a tremendous success.

So far this month, the MDA has raised $24,000, with a goal of $43,000 by the end of November. Amigo Mobility has supported the Muscular Dystrophy Association throughout the years, and we thank Kate for her participation.

"Locked Up" for MDA

For the second year in a row, an Amigo employee is being sent behind bars in support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This year, Marketing Manager Kate Hofmann has been sentenced to jail for a day for “having a big heart,” following in the footsteps of Jordan Thieme who did time last year.

The MDA Saginaw Lock-Up event helps those affected by muscular dystrophy in Saginaw County by raising money for clinic visits, summer camp for youth, flu shots, research and more! The event will take place on October 30th in Saginaw, Mich.

Kate will be raising money to “make bail”, with all proceeds going to MDA and helping adults and children in the local community. Amigo is proud to be a part of the Lock-Up in support of such a wonderful cause.

Accessibility on the Go - Accessible Business App

Have you ever wondered if that restaurant downtown has a ramp to avoid stairs, or a restroom that is accessible? For Jason DaSilva, getting around New York City in a wheelchair often posed many problems.

Although accessibility has improved since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, many buildings are still not easily accessible for various reasons. Silva, a filmmaker with multiple sclerosis, developed the mobile app "AXS Map" to help people with mobility issues find out which businesses are accessible, and to what degree.

What makes the app unique is the reviews are not created by the business owners, or "specialists", but rather peers who experience the accessibility of the business first-hand. This app is the perfect tool for someone vacationing, or exploring a new area of town. To find accessible businesses in your town, visit their website at www.axsmap.com and download the app!

Breaking Records in Chicago

United States Paralympian and disability advocate Tatyana McFadden competed in the Chicago Marathon Sunday. McFadden was the winner of the women's wheelchair race in the 2013 London Marathon, a week after taking first in the Boston Marathon. Entering last week's race, she was attempting to become the first athlete in history (including runners!) to win 3 major marathons in a season.

The race came down to a sprint finish between McFadden and Manuela Schaer of Switzerland. McFadden was able to use her speed and beat Schaer by a mere 3 seconds, grabbing first place and a spot in the record books. In addition to being the first athlete to win 3 major races in a year, she set a new Chicago Marathon course record. Congratulations, Tatyana, on your tremendous accomplishments!

Running for Rooprai at the Berlin Marathon

Amigo Mobility President Tim Drumhiller completed his 20th marathon in impressive fashion September 29 in Berlin! The 26.2 mile race took him through the historic streets of Berlin, Germany’s largest city. The crisp fall weather helped Tim to a personal best time of 3:18:09. On the day, he was the 7th fastest American in his age group, with the race consisting of over 40,000 participants from around the world.

Tim ran in support of a UK-based spinal charity, The Rooprai Spinal Trust (link to facebook page). This was his second time running on European soil to benefit the charity, the first being the London Marathon this past spring. Leading up to the race, Tim raised nearly $1,800 for RS Trust. Between the Berlin and London Marathon fundraising efforts, the RS Trust team has raised close to $27,000 to benefit spinal research this year. “Berlin exceeded even my highest of expectations – a personal best time by six minutes, and another opportunity to run for the Rooprai team,” Tim said, “I look forward to continuing my relationship with RS Trust for years to come.”
We are so proud of Tim and all the energy he put into benefiting the RS Trust!
